Fiano, of Latin origin, is a varietal enjoying Irpinia terroir both on volcanic and clay soils.
It is a strong and vigorous varietal and the grape – thanks to its resistant skin – matures until the end of October. Fiano wine is aromatic and persistent, thus condensing the complexity and richness of its native territory.
The city of Avellino, in whose area Fiano acquires very special characteristics, gives its name to one of the only two white wines from southern Italy to have been granted Designation of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin (DOCG) status, the other being Greco di Tufo. For both, recognition came 20 years ago in 2003.
Of the three Irpinian DOCGs, Fiano di Avellino DOCG is the largest in terms of geographical area, encompassing twenty-six communes that are so scattered that some are almost 40 kilometres from each other: Avellino, Lapio, Atripalda, Cesinali, Aiello del Sabato, S. Stefano del Sole, Sorbo Serpico, Salza Irpina, Parolise, S. Potito Ultra, Candida, Manocalzati, Pratola Serra, Montefredane, Grottolella, Capriglia Irpina, S. Angelo a Scala, Summonte, Mercogliano, Forino, Contrada, Monteforte Irpino, Ospedaletto D’Alpinolo, Montefalcione, Santa Lucia di Serino e San Michele di Serino.
