Constellations

In the Constellations series – watercolours and carvings on canvas paper – Pietro Ruffo superimposes two different maps: the background consists of a terrestrial map, an instrument that has become increasingly accurate over the centuries, but as it is linked to political changes it often becomes unreliable; the upper layer, painted and carved, instead represents a celestial map in which the main stars and constellations of the sky are indicated, inaccurate from a scientific point of view, but unchanging over the centuries.
