Taurasi is the first (and from 1993 to 2003 the only) DOCG (Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin) designated wine in the whole of the south of Italy and 30 years have passed since its recognition.
The old town and the hills of Taurasi create a fantastic viticulture oasis: here Aglianico finds its ideal terroir – uncontaminated, volcanic, and impenetrable – thus giving birth to intense, complex and elegant wines also thanks to oak ageing. This is how a great Aglianico becomes Taurasi DOCG.
Taurasi is produced in an area with a great winemaking tradition, which includes 17 small villages, all in Irpinia: Taurasi, Bonito, Castelfranci, Castelvetere sul Calore, Fontanarosa, Lapio, Luogosano, Mirabella Eclano, Montefalcione, Montemarano, Montemiletto, Paternopoli, Pietradefusi, Sant’Angelo all’Esca, San Mango sul Calore, Torre le Nocelle e Venticano, , all in the province of Avellino.
The vineyards sit at between 300 and 600 metres above sea level.
In the Taurasi DOCG area, the balance between the climate, the vine and the soil appears perfect, a balance that has been harmonizing and strengthening over the centuries, until it merges into a wine with superior characteristics, which is characterized by its aromatic complexity, the velvety, full and elegant taste, the intense and delicate aromas.
